TRT – Myths vs Medical Reality
Separating Fact from Fiction About Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) can be life-changing for men suffering the debilitating effects of low testosterone, but it’s often surrounded by confusion and misinformation.
At Urban TRT Ireland, our doctors are some of the UK's leading experts in men's hormone health. They offer medically supervised testosterone treatments to patients in Ireland and beyond.
In this article we look at the most common misconceptions surrounding TRT and clarify the facts based on the latest medical evidence.
Is TRT Legal in Ireland?
Yes, Testosterone Replacement Therapy is entirely legal in Ireland when prescribed by a registered doctor for the treatment of hormone deficiency.
The confusion over this issue stems from the misuse of anabolic steroids for performance enhancement in sports or bodybuilding.
However, prescribed testosterone therapy for clinically diagnosed hypogonadism is a recognised and regulated medical treatment in the UK and Ireland.
Will TRT make me angry and aggressive?
No. When medically supervised, TRT often improves mood and emotional stability.
The idea that testosterone therapy is linked with aggression typically arises from misuse of steroids, not medicinal use of TRT. Clinical studies show that balanced TRT can help to reduce anxiety, alleviate depression and increase focus, energy and emotional wellbeing in men suffering with low testosterone.
Does TRT lead to breast growth in men?
Sometimes, but it's avoidable. Gynecomastia (or the development of "man boobs") is a rare side effect of TRT which is entirely preventable.
An imbalance between testosterone and oestrogen can lead to slight breast tissue development in men. However, this can be prevented through close monitoring and additional medications that regulate hormone levels. At Urban TRT Ireland, we routinely screen for and manage oestrogen imbalances as part of your treatment plan, so you don't need to be concerned about this issue.
Will I get huge muscles from taking TRT?
No. While TRT can support lean muscle growth, you’ll still need to work out.
TRT helps your body respond better to resistance training and may enhance muscle tone and fat loss, but it won’t replace the need for proper diet and exercise. Think of it as restoring your body to its natural potential, not artificially inflating it.
Is TRT dangerous for the heart?
The latest studies show no elevated cardiovascular risk with medically supervised TRT.
Large-scale trials, including a 2023 study in the New England Journal of Medicine, found no significant increase in heart attack or stroke risk among men using TRT.
Nonetheless, men with a history of heart disease should discuss this with their Urban TRT doctor before starting therapy. All our doctors are fully trained medical professionals and will evaluate your situation carefully before prescribing testosterone medication.
Is testosterone decline just part of ageing?
Yes to some extent, but while testosterone does decline with age, the symptoms of this can and should be treated for optimum wellbeing.
Research shows that up to 25% of men over 40 suffer from low testosterone, which can cause fatigue, depression, low libido, and muscle loss. Medical advancements mean that there's no need to live with these symptoms unnecessarily.
Will TRT Shrink My Testicles or Harm Fertility?
Possibly, but this is preventable. Testicle size can reduce with TRT but we can adapt your protocol to avoid this happening.
TRT can suppress your body’s natural testosterone production, leading to testicular shrinkage in some cases.
To avoid this, Urban TRT Ireland offers medications such as hCG to help maintain testicular function and protect fertility. If you have concerns about this issue, discuss it with your doctor, especially if you plan to have children.
Does TRT treat erectile dysfunction?
Sometimes, but ED has many causes.
While TRT can improve libido and support erectile function in men with low testosterone, ED can also stem from cardiovascular problems, mental health issues, or other medical conditions.
If you're concerned about this issue, discuss it with your Urban TRT doctor. Our medical team are highly experienced and can help you decide whether TRT is the right option for you.
Can TRT cause prostate cancer?
The latest scientific research does not support this.
According to Harvard University Health Publishing 2023 study of over 5000 men in the USA (by JAMA Network Open), has confirmed earlier research showing that TRT in men with hypogonadism, medically supervised TRT does not increase their risk of developing prostate cancer, compared to men not using TRT.
Men with prostate cancer are advised to avoid TRT, and you should always consult your doctor if you have any prostate health concerns. At Urban TRT, all patients undergo a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test before starting therapy to ensure safety.
Does TRT cause hair loss?
TRT may speed up hair loss in genetically prone men, but does not cause it directly.
TRT can increase dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which affects hair follicles in those predisposed to male pattern baldness. However, this is not universal. We offer additional treatments to help counteract hair thinning if it occurs.
