Check Your Testosterone Levels With Our First Blood Test

Getting help for your symptoms and beginning testosterone therapy starts with the right diagnostic testing.

Your initial blood test is the essential first step. In line with Irish and UK clinical guidelines, eligibility for TRT requires two separate blood tests confirming low testosterone levels. This first screening test provides a crucial result, giving a clear picture of your current hormone status and whether you meet the criteria to proceed.

What Biomarkers Does This Test Check?

This test measures the following key hormones:

Total Testosterone
Free Testosterone
Albumin
SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin)

This will give us an insight into both the quantity of testosterone and how your body processes it. The readings help explain symptoms like low energy, libido changes, or reduced motivation. Find out more about them in our guide to male hormone blood test terminology.

Your Sample Collection Options

You can choose how you’d like to complete your blood test.  Options include a home finger-prick test using Randox Tasso+ device.  This is a virtually painless, easy to use method for collecting your sample.  It allows you to collect a high-grade sample in the comfort of your own home and full instructions will be provided.

Alternatively you can choose to visit one of our network of clinics or book a visit to your home from a qualified phlebotomist nurse.

Choose the option you would prefer from the drop down, and once you have checked out, we will contact you to help make the arrangements for the test.

Follow Our Blood Testing Guidelines

Whichever test option you choose, in order to ensure an accurate and reliable test results, please follow our blood testing guidelines.

Quick and Reliable Results

Once we receive the results, we will promptly guide you through the next steps of your personalised TRT treatment journey. This ensures a smooth transition to the next phase of care, if you are eligible.

What Happens Next?

If your testosterone reading is below the expected threshold for your age group, you are eligible to move on to a second, more comprehensive blood test.

This next stage includes a broader analysis of male hormones and is necessary before beginning a medically supervised TRT programme. At Urban TRT we adhere to best clinical practices based on BSSM guidelines to ensure safe, effective, and personalised treatment.

The test measures key biomarkers such as total testosterone, free testosterone, SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin), and albumin—giving insight into both the quantity of testosterone and how your body processes it. These readings help explain symptoms like low energy, libido changes, or reduced motivation.

Comprehensive Male Hormone Blood Test

In Ireland, just as in the UK, diagnosing testosterone deficiency safely and effectively requires two separate blood tests. If your initial test shows low testosterone levels, the next step is a more detailed follow-up blood panel. This comprehensive test checks a broader range of health indicators to give our medical team a full understanding of your hormonal and general health.

As with the initial blood test, it must be carried out via a venous blood draw.  We’ve partnered with trusted Irish healthcare providers to make this process as convenient as possible.

You can choose to visit a nearby clinic or opt for a home visit from a qualified phlebotomy nurse. Full instructions will be provided, and we’ll help you choose the option that best suits your schedule.

What Does the Advanced Test Measure?

This follow-up test includes an extensive panel of biomarkers relevant to testosterone production and your overall health:

  • Total & Free Testosterone
  • LH (Luteinising Hormone)
  • FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)
  • SHBG
  • Albumin
  • Oestradiol & Prolactin
  • Lipid Profile (Cholesterol & Triglycerides)
  • Full Blood Count (FBC) & Haematocrit (HCT)
  • PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen)
  • Thyroid Function (TSH & T4)
  • Liver & Kidney Function  (LFT & U&Es)
  • Cortisol
  • Vitamin D, B12, Folate (B9)
  • Ferritin (Iron Storage)

Each marker provides important insights, allowing us to tailor any future treatment to your individual needs. These tests also ensure that any potential underlying health issues are identified early.  You can find out more about these biomarkers in our Guide to Male Hormone Blood Testing Terminology

Guidance to Prepare for Your Blood Test

Whichever option you choose for your blood draw, to improve test accuracy and ensure the best possible sample please follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid ejaculation, sexual activity, and high-intensity exercise (like cycling) for at least 48 hours beforehand to avoid skewed PSA results.
  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking 500ml–1L of water in the hours before your appointment. This makes blood draws quicker and easier.

Always follow the detailed pre-test instructions included with your booking and read the additional pre-test information here.

Fast Results, Professional Support

Once your test results are available, we’ll send them to you in a secure PDF format and one of our specialist doctors will review them.  Assuming that your testosterone levels are confirmed to be low, you’ll be invited to book a consultation to explore your options and receive personalised medical guidance.

Ongoing Blood Testing As Part Of Your TRT Programme

Ongoing blood testing is a vital part of safe and effective testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), and it is a mandatory element of your treatment with Urban TRT Ireland. Regular follow-up testing allows our medical team to assess how your body is responding to treatment and ensure your hormone levels are within optimal range.  We will adjust your dosage if needed, thus helping you to maximise the benefits of TRT while minimising potential side effects.  Our tests check for raised oestrogen, elevated haematocrit, changes in liver and cardiovascular markers, amongst other things.

In Ireland, as in all countries offering responsible hormone therapy, routine blood tests are considered best medical practice. At Urban TRT, your testing schedule includes a six-week review after starting treatment, followed by tests at three months, six months, and then every six months. These appointments give us the data we need to provide truly personalised care.

Consultations with our doctors are built into your subscription at key stages, and our support team is on hand between appointments if you have any concerns. All results are treated with complete confidentiality and reviewed only by our qualified clinicians.
