How Does the Home Sperm Test Work?

The ExSeed sperm test is designed to be easy to use and the results are clear and simple to interpret.  There are 4 steps to the process:

  1. Collect Your Sample: Use the kit provided to collect your sample in the privacy of your own home.  Follow the instructions given to prepare the sample for scanning (take a look at the video for advice).
  2. Use Your Smart Phone Camera and the ExSeed app : The ExSeed device connects to your smartphone, using its camera to record a live video of your swimmers.
  3. Get Your Results Within Minutes : The app analyses the video and calculates your score for sperm volume, motility and concentration.
  4. Follow the App's Advice to Improve Your Fertility : If your results indicate that your semen quality is below normal levels, the ExSeed app & support team will give you personalised advice on how to improve your chances of conceiving.

How Does The Test Measure Sperm Quality?

The ExSeed Home Sperm Test assesses the Total Motile Sperm Count.  That is, the total number of sperm cells actively swimming forward in a single ejaculate.  This is one of the most accurate indicators of male fertility, as it reflects how many sperm cells have the potential to reach and fertilize an egg during intercourse.

The Total Motile Sperm Count is calculated based on three key factors: semen volume, sperm concentration and motility.

Volume - This is the total quantity of fluid in a single ejaculate.  This is normally 1.5ml or more. If it is consistently below this level, this is known as hypospermia, and it can be caused by hormonal abnormalities.

Concentration - This is the number of sperm cells per millilitre of semen.  A normal concentration is at least 15 million sperm cells per millilitre.

Motility - This is a measure of the forward swimming motion of the sperm cells.  For a normal level of motility we would expect to see at least 32% of sperm cells being motile.

If your results show that your Total Motile Sperm Count is below normal, your app will advise you on what you can do to improve your fertility.  You can also speak to your Urban TRT doctors for advice.

How Does Knowing My Sperm Count Improve Fertility?

If your results show you have a low sperm count, you have the opportunity to improve our sperm health and thus your likelihood of conceiving.   The ExSeed app provides personalised lifestyle advice on issue including diet, exercise and more to help improve the strength of your swimmers.

Much of the focus of discussions about fertility is on women, but in fact, up to 50% of cases involve male factors.  If you test your sperm count before you try to conceive, it gives you plenty of time to address any health issues you discover.  If you are already struggling to conceive, knowing your test results can help you feel confident and save time during discussions with doctors.

Sperm Count and IVF

Tests have shown that higher quality sperm leads to better IVF outcomes.   A recent study found that improving sperm quality increased the number of healthy embryos produced in IVF cycles by up to 50%.   Testing your sperm before starting IVF can avoid expensive waste cycles and can help speed the path to a successful pregnancy.

Home Sperm Testing FAQs

Why does the home sperm test kit include more than one test?

«

Sperm quality naturally fluctuates, so a below-normal result on one occasion doesn’t necessarily mean there’s an underlying issue.

Various factors, including illness, can temporarily affect sperm health.  For this reason, we recommend testing your semen quality twice, with at least one week between tests. It’s also beneficial to repeat the test after about a month. This approach is in line with the World Health Organization’s recommendations for sperm analysis.

How does TRT impact on sperm health?

«

Tests have shown that Testosterone Replacement Therapy can reduce sperm count.  If you are on TRT or considering it, and want to protect your fertility, speak to your Urban TRT doctor who will prescribe you hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) medication alongside your testosterone therapy.  HCG helps to keep the body's hormone production working naturally, especially in relation to sperm production, thus protecting your fertility.

Can ExSeed by used if I've had a vasectomy?

«

The ExSeed Home Test is not certified for confirming the complete absence of sperm cells or for evaluating the effectiveness of contraceptive methods, whether temporary or permanent, such as a vasectomy. Therefore, it cannot provide a definitive result in these cases.

However, many men have used ExSeed to gain an indication of whether live sperm cells are still present after a procedure or in similar situations.

Within the app, you can select an option indicating that you’ve had a vasectomy. Doing so prompts our Medical Team to perform an additional, detailed manual review (visual inspection) of your test.

What should I do when I get my test result?

«

The app instantly generates a comprehensive health report, which you can share with your doctor to support further discussions about your fertility or any other health issues.

How does the ExSeed test differ from other home sperm tests?

«

ExSeed is currently the only at-home sperm test that measures total motile sperm count, a key metric that some other home tests may miss when evaluating common causes of male infertility. The system is designed for easy sharing of results, with your doctor, allowing you to obtain a second opinion on your results.

The ExSeed Home Sperm Test uses microscopy, which is considered the clinical gold standard, and provides a clear recording of your sperm in motion.

The ExSeed customer support team is ready to assist with any issues during testing or if you have concerns about whether the test was performed correctly.
